A lot at night I saw the Pleiades, rising through the soft shade,
Sequins like a swarm of fireflies tangled in a silver braid.
Here about the beach, I was walking, nourishing a sublime youth
With the fairy tales of science, and the long result of time;

~ LOCKSLEY hallLord Alfred Tennyson

A long time ago, long before Tennyson wrote Locksley Hall, or Homer wrote the Iliad, or even before the strangers paint the Lascaux caves, the Pleiades were born.

Modern science has a history on the way it happened. It implies clouds of dust, the force of gravity and shock waves of dying stars. The Pleiades were born slowly, in this story, through the uninformed gathering of the atoms in tenuous clouds, then quickly, when the shock of a nearby supernova made these clouds collapse in fire balls and a group of stars.
