Martin Bean is a distinguished leader in the field of education, known for his innovative approach and his dedication to the expansion of access to learning. Here we interview Martin Bean on his career and his experiences.

Who, or what was your most important teacher?

My most important teacher was a real world experience – engaging directly with leaders, educators and students faced with challenges in an evolving landscape. Each meeting was a lesson in resilience, adaptability and search for a significant impact.

What was your most important lesson?

The power of an adaptive state of mind. Thanks to my work, I saw how essential resilience and openness are essential, especially in turbulent times. Adaptability allows individuals and organizations to navigate uncertainties while remaining aligned with their fundamental values and mission.

What do you think will have a lasting impact?

Micro-creditor and learning based on skills. As employers are increasingly favoring skills, alternative references allow lifelong learners to remain relevant. This trend redefines education, which makes it more accessible and lines up with the evolution of the needs of the workforce.

In your opinion, what technology has the greatest influence on how we learn now?

The development of learning management systems (LMS). Platforms like Canvas and others have transformed how educators offer and assess learning, break down geographic barriers and creating adaptive and centered experiences on the student.

What is the coolest gadget / technology / tool that you’ve seen lately?

AI Generative. This reshapes, research and creation of content to personalized learning ways. The potential of AI to increase teaching and administrative tasks is impressive, and I see it as a change of game in education.

What would be the title of your autobiography?

“Navigation of turbulence: leadership, learning and life lessons.” My journey was a mixture of regular growth and constant change, both personally and professionally. This title reflects the themes of resilience and adaptation that have defined my work and my philosophy.

What was your first thought of our global theme, “brace for transformation: the courage to redefine learning”?

I felt that it sounded strongly with our time. The rapid progress of technology, societal expectations and today’s environmental challenges mean that traditional learning models are no longer sufficient. It is a courageous call to educators to adopt boldly change and redefine learning with integrity and vision.

Do you have a final message for the OEB community?

Kiss the change with curiosity and compassion. While we redefine learning, do not lose sight of its objective: allow individuals to make a positive impact for themselves and their communities. Technology can be a tool, but it is the approach centered on humans that will guarantee that education remains a force for good.

Thank you, Martin. Martin Haricot will speak to OEB annual debate Thursday, November 28, 2024.
