The online learning consortium (OLC) was the pioneer of quality online education growth in US higher education. The recent Accelerate 2024 conference marked the 30th anniversary of its first conference and the 25th anniversary of the Consortium Foundation. This recently published review says that twenty reports over twelve years and provides a unique historical recording of registrations and trends in online learning from 2002 to 2015. The project was the only source to follow online registrations and answered critical questions about teachers’ attitudes and online courses.
Initially known as Sloan Consortium, or Sloan-C, in recognition of the founding support of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the online learning consortium provided unique and critical support and support for the emerging field of online education. The first conferences, research meetings and publications provided essential advice to an emerging field. In addition to providing newsletters, a research review and publication reports, the Sloan Consortium provided one of the first and the greatest means for those who move in this new field to meet, compare notes and learn from each other.
The 20 original reports spread over 12 years had a huge impact on the growth of the field, as evidenced by:
– more than 2.7 million copies downloaded
– more than 27,000 quotes in university journals
– Large international extent – 183 countries
– Large coverage in the popular press (New York Times, Washington Post, NBC News)
The impact continues today, with more than 10,000 additional reports downloaded each month and four additional academic quotes each day.
